Weather:
It’s February and the windows are open. There’s been some snows and cold mornings here and there but overall this winters been mostly smooth sailing. Much better than previous artic imprisonments.
Some videos of recent vintage:
Nick put together a bunch of iphone stuff from everyone and everyone was goddamn happy!
Jackson also put together some throwaway stuff and California clips.
Speaking of Jackson, he closes out G’s vid. It’s a Chicago classic for certain. A ton of great stuff in there from J. Ward, footage from the Rutas and a surpise Ron Allen part. If you haven’t picked it up at Uprise you can get it here.
The Deep Dish crew continue to hold the “most productive midwest” title.
Jesse went out west and put together some edits. Check his profile more of this awesomeness.
We went on our annual pilgrimage to Texas. I have a good amount of photos and we filmed a lot of stuff for this summers Farecard. I’ll post about that in the next couple of weeks. For now Zack’s edit will have to hold you over.
One of the places that has been kind enough to feature a good number of my photos was Gapers Block so it was a bit of a downer to hear about their demise.
Here are the things that happened:
This post marks a pretty big milestone for Such Luck.
It celebrates 10 years of skating curbs, making pictures and eating tacos.
Before this I had a short lived site called the Lightbulb Sanctuary.
It was a standard site. All html. Clunky.
Eventually that fell away and was reborn a while later as this site.
The early posts on Such Luck are pretty straightforward blog stuff.
Some of the writing makes me cringe. Some of the photos aren’t that great. There was a bit more focus on art.
Over time things evolved and developed and changed and eventually got into a pretty good groove.
There were video series, no comply contests, BBQs, art shows, lots of polaroids and drawings on cardboard.
Along the way there were some complaints.
More food.
Less food.
Too much skateboarding.
Too much writing.
Too many pictures.
As the site lived on I taught myself a little coding.
There was also some stickers, koozies, lot of things mailed and eventually the annual holiday mailer.
I never really tried to monetize the site.
Maybe that was a mistake.
So at ten years what is this?
As the date apporached I tried to figure out what to to commerate being around for this long.
Maybe an indepth recap.
Or some top ten lists.
A collection of my favorite photos.
I thought about highlighting the old trick tip vids and the Buster Brothers edits.
But I don’t have as much time as I used to.
I’m still trying to find time to skate as much as I can.
And shoot more photos.
And brew beer.
Roast some peanuts.
Get a good nights sleep.
Make more art.
I’m always trying to be a better husband, friend, family member, co-worker, general human being.
I also seem to waste a good amount of time watching reruns and listening to podcasts.
I originally started this post in December and I’m only finishing it now.
Even now I’m leaving out 50 or 60 pictures of stuff that happened since then.
Wait I think I’m getting unfocused.
Basically I like to think of this as a pretty good set of memories for when I forget.
What happened in July of 2011? September 2009?
I can go easily go back in the archives and find the closest date and it’ll probably jog my memory.
At least there’ll be some pictures there.
Not sure what that means to anyone else but it means the world to me.
It’s kind of a distillation of the good times.
The morning szechuans, the trips out of town, the laughter, the rainouts, the weddings, the deliciousness, the friendships, the shows and the adventures.
If you’re reading this there’s probably a good chance you were a part of it too.
There’s also some of hard times in there. The people who aren’t here anymore. The disappointments, guilt and regret.
I’m not sure what the next ten years or even the next year will bring.
Since this site started blogs have pretty much died off or been replaced by tumblrs or instagram and the amount of content and distraction out there just keeps growing.
I’m not going to worry about it too much.
I guess I’ll keep going for as long as I enjoy it.
In the meantime I’m working on a few things for this summer to celebrate the past 10 years
The final Farecard should be out this summer.
I sent out the yearly holiday mailer but I’m also working on a mailer to coincide with the anniversary.
Mainly I want to thank everyone.
All the friends, skaters, locals, co-workers, haters, enemies, my family, and my wife.
A lot of times I close letters to friends with this saying and I think it fits well here:
“Keep making things and making things happen.
I’ll try and do the same.”
