sense of urgency

Weather:
Ice and snow. Start all over again.

This week there are a number of things that you should be aware of, events to attend and exciting announcements. You should probably get excited.

Tomorrow night. February 20th. 7:00-11:00pm.
HUNGRY a project by Raphael Barontini at Second Bedroom Gallery. Ryan Murray will be showing in the Medicine Cabinet. You can find both of these at 3216 S. Morgan, Apt 4R.

Before you head to the gallery or after you’re done enjoying the art, stop by the Rip Curl Hair Salon grand opening at 1449 N. Ashland. It’s going on 8-11. There will be beer. Help John kick things off properly.

I’m getting tattooed Friday night so I’ll be missing them both.

Saturday night you can check out Jumpsuit performing at the Bottom Lounge as part of Rory Lake’s Battle of the Bands. It’s at the new Bottom Lounge so don’t go to Belmont, go to 1375 w. Lake Street.

That’s all I can think of event wise. I have that weird nagging feeling that there’s something next Saturday that I’m supposed to be aware of but I can’t think of it at the moment.

Last week there was some sort of Friday the 13th event at Oddball tattoos in Portland and Dan Kopton clicked the flicks for a photographical essay.

Tony Francesconi’s knee is still healing up but I’m glad to report that it’s not terminal. He is part of the Undeniables Project. They’ve just released the first publication for your consumption.

Have you heard? Old Style went back to Kraeusening.

I’ve resumed my quest to find new outstanding beef spots. Here’s Chubby Weiner’s offering.

Italilan Beef from Chubby Weiner

It was a decent sandwich but I have to mark it down for the odd bread. Take a good look at how thick the bread is. If there was nothing else around I’d probably go back but just down the street is one of my all time favorites, Max’s. The peppers and the dip give the sandwich a weird red hue. They also use a spice that gives it a very distinct taste. Not sure what it is but I’d call it peculiar and I mean that in the best possible way.

They even stock the tables with buckets of peppers.

Recently there was skating at Wilson. Gordon showed up with a growth.

Gordons second knee

As bad as it looks it didn’t slow him down.

After a few hours at the park and much debate we listened to Scott’s suggestion and went to the Wing Stop for a pre-Alienpremier afternoon lunch.

The fries and the cajun sauce were pretty good.

This is how I spent Valentine’s Day.

Valentine's Day

It was super romantic.

I’m declaring this my new cure for the common cold. Cozy Noodles Pad Prik with chicken. It’s got a heat to it.

I think Scott’s pro for Buster Bear.

My brother’s in town for a bit so if I come up missing you’ll know what sort of trouble I’m getting into.

Arizona post next week and this time I mean it.

Weather:
Tomorrow it’s going to be in the mid-60s. It won’t last but I did get to skate outside yesterday and that should keep me going for a few weeks.

This week the Beastie Boys rereleased Paul’s Boutique in a remastered version to commemorate the 20th anniversary. If you’ve never heard it I can’t recommend it enough. Definitely in my Desert Island list. While I’m on the subject, the Beastie Boys are also up there for one of my favorite shows. If I remember correctly it was 93 or 94 and me, Berni, Justin and Dan saw them play the Riv. Firehose opened. Mike Watt broke a bass string. The floor actually bounced from the crowd.

I saw AWS’s Mind Field last night. J. Mascis shreds it. Worth actually seeing for the weirdness. I’m hoping they get around to the Memory Screen, Timecode, Photosynthesis, box set next.

If you pick up a copy I’d suggest looking into my Quality Trick Chex Mix so you can cook up a batch to enjoy with the awesomeness.

Good reads?
Well Stever has been traveling around Mexico and blogging his traveling adventures so add that to the bookmarks. After that hit up Borders and pick up Kyle’s debut novel “The Slide.”

Even though it’s recently warmed up there’s been plenty of brutal days.

Chicago = The Hoth System

So since I can’t skate I’ve been eating a lot of delicious food because Such Luck is an all eating intertron site now. Yup, nothing but eating.

Lucky's sandwich

I lived down the street from Lucky’s Sandwich shop when they opened up a few years ago and I went in a day or two after they opened and ordered a sandwich. When they asked if I wanted fries and coleslaw I said sure not knowing they meant as part of the sandwich.

Allison likes the egg and cheese. There might be bacon in there too. The coleslaw has a distinct tanginess. Something to try if you’re in the neighborhood. It’s turned into more of a sports bar since the last time I was there but that’s understandable. Pre-sports bar it was pretty empty. Now with college basketball and buckets of beer and I could barely get a seat. Or maybe the sandwiches just needed a little time to catch on.

These have have nothing to do with anything but I think it might be a visual representation of the magic hour.

Or some sort of apocalypse scenario.

If you look back at the last post you know we went up to Cream City. Suhail selected the hesh spork to help destroy his Taco Bell.

A few weeks back Closing In played their first show.

Closing In

It seemed like they been playing together for years. I’m hoping they put the demo out soon. For now you can listen to the myspace stuff.

Closing In at the Beat Kitchen

Then came The Party Downers.

Their albums out and it’s a classic.

Celebrate the news.

H. Lewis - Party Downers

More skating? Nope, more food! We hit up Pannenkoeken to enjoy the Dutch pancakes.

Pannenkoeken - Chicago

It’s pretty small. I’m guessing they seat under 20 max so get there early or try and hit them up on a week day.

Pannenkoeken - hashbrowns

Very good. Very rich. I’d suggest waking up. Eating. Then a nice nap.

Pannenkoeken - Chicago

Okay now skating. Well I did get some footage on this visit to the carwash but I still need to edit it. So here’s the Buster Bear corporation getting weird.

Buster Bears

Notice anything a bit off in this picture of Brad cause the doctors are trying to tell him he’s good as new.

winterd

Arizona was outstanding. Good weather, great crew, lots of parks, weird spots, general awesomeness. I got a stack of polaroids to scan, hundreds of pictures to crop and lots of editing to narrow down. I’ll try and post something before the end of the month.

Valentine’s Day is coming up. Go buy a bag of those weird chalk tasting hearts.

Those are the worst.
